About St John the Evangelist

St John the Evangelist is a Church of England church on Iffley Road in Oxford. It is non-parochial and has also served as a chapel for St Stephen’s House since 1980. Sunday Mass is held during the University’s academic year. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Built between 1894 and 1896 for the Oxford home of the Society of St John the Evangelist, the church was designed by G. F. Bodley chiefly in the Decorated Gothic manner. Flying buttresses with pinnacles support the aisles and chancel, while the battlemented western tower was completed in 1902. Stained glass by C. E. Kempe, dating from around 1900, fills windows at the eastern and western ends and in the north-east. Edward Arthur Fellowes Prynne’s painted Stations of the Cross were installed in 1921. Restoration and refurbishment took place in 2008, when underfloor heating was added.
