About St Giles' Church, Oxford
St Giles’ Church is a Church of England parish church in north Oxford, Oxfordshire. It occupies a prominent position where St Giles meets Banbury Road and Woodstock Road. Now relatively central following the city’s expansion, the church retains its own ecclesiastical parish and forms part of a united benefice with neighbouring parishes. The building is listed at Grade I, and Oxford’s war memorial borders the southern edge of its churchyard.
Completed in 1120, the church was consecrated in 1200 by St Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln. Elements surviving from the 12th century include two clerestory windows and the lower section of the tower. The tower, aisle arcades and lancet windows date mainly from the early 13th century, while the Gothic chancel was added later that century. Inside are memorial figures representing Henry and Alice Bosworth with their children. The tower contains eight bells, of which the earliest was cast in 1632.
