About St Clement's Church
St Clement's Church is an active evangelical Anglican parish church east of Oxford city centre. Serving the St Clement's area of Oxford, it belongs to the Church of England and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The present church was erected between 1825 and 1828, replacing a medieval predecessor near The Plain that was demolished in 1829. Daniel Robertson designed the building in a Romanesque Revival style with Anglo-Norman influences, and Oxford builder John Hudson carried out the work. The site in Hacklingcroft Meadow was donated by local banker and goldsmith Sir Joseph Lock. John Henry Newman, who served briefly as curate, helped raise funds for the project. Earlier records trace the parish church to at least 1122, while much of its former building appears to have resulted from rebuilding begun in 1323.
