About St Bartholomew's Chapel
St Bartholomew’s Chapel is a Church of England place of worship on Bartlemas Lane in Oxford. The compact building, sometimes called Bartlemas Chapel, has Grade I protection. A service of Evensong following the Book of Common Prayer is held on each month’s final Sunday, with no service in December.
The church was constructed in the early 1300s for a hospital founded under Henry I about two centuries earlier to accommodate twelve ill residents and a priest. Edward III placed the institution under Oriel College in 1328. Inside, the nave continues directly into the chancel, and the medieval northern entrance retains its bevelled arch. Fifteenth-century work reshaped the western entrance and roof in the Perpendicular Gothic manner. Further details include uncommon patterns in the paired-light windows, remnants of painted crosses, a 1651 screen presented by Oriel College, and restrained timber furnishings by Ninian Comper. Civil War activity caused damage to both the chapel and hospital complex.
