About St Barnabas Church
St Barnabas Church stands on Cardigan Street in Oxford’s Jericho district, a short distance from the Oxford Canal. It remains an active Church of England place of worship with an Anglo-Catholic character and is protected at Grade I. Since the 2015 union with St Thomas the Martyr, it has been the principal church of the combined parish, with St Thomas serving as its chapel.
Completed in 1868 and consecrated in 1869, the church was established by Thomas and Martha Combe to serve poorer workers in the growing neighbourhood. The couple were associated with the Tractarian movement, while Thomas supervised the nearby Oxford University Press. Arthur Blomfield created a Romanesque basilican design influenced by historic Italian churches. A conspicuous square campanile, completed in 1872, rises above the surrounding streets. The building also contains an 1887 pulpit with panels painted by Charles Floyce. Its ten tubular bells sound each quarter and hour.
