About St Aldate's Church

St Aldate’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in central Oxford, within the Oxford deanery and diocese. Located by Pembroke Street, beside Pembroke College and facing Christ Church, it serves a sizeable congregation drawn from Oxford and nearby villages. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Christian worship has taken place on the site since Saxon times, and it may once have formed part of St Frideswide’s monastic precinct. The nave and chancel date principally from the 12th century, while the south aisle was added in the 14th century and the north aisle in the 15th. A 13th-century tower was replaced completely in 1873. Nineteenth-century alterations included work to the interior, new aisles beside the chancel and a vestry. Further changes in 2002 introduced stone tiles, timber floors and underfloor heating, while an opening in the north wall led into a broad glazed entrance area.
