About St Boniface Kirk (Papa Westray)
St Boniface Kirk (Papa Westray) is a historic church and burial ground in Westray, Orkney, Scotland. It is occasionally used today and has been protected as a Category A listed building since 1971. The site was also designated a scheduled monument in 1959.
The present church was constructed by Norse builders during the 12th century, on a site occupied since the Iron Age and probably later used by a Christian monastic community. Built from rendered rubble, it is a small, single-storey rectangular structure with a slate roof and stepped gables. An extension was added at the western end in 1710 to accommodate a gallery reached by an outside staircase. Repairs took place in 1843, followed by restoration in 1993. The enclosed graveyard contains a 12th-century red sandstone hogback monument decorated with a roof-tile design. Two Pictish carved cross stones discovered there during the 20th century were transferred to Scottish museums.
