About Breckness House and site of chapel
Breckness House and site of chapel lies on the south-western coast of Mainland, around 3 km west of Stromness in Orkney. The scheduled monument includes a ruined seventeenth-century residence, the remains of an older chapel and burial ground, and part of a prehistoric settlement. It received scheduled protection in 1957.
George Graham, Bishop of Orkney, had the two-storey house built in 1633. Constructed from rubble and clay, it has an L-shaped plan comprising a central block and a northward wing. Its surviving interior features include fireplaces, doorways and evidence of a spiral stair, while a likely former garden enclosure can be seen to the south. The chapel occupied a small raised area nearby, where burials aligned from east to west have been found. A damaged stone bearing a short runic inscription was discovered close to an old field wall in 2001.
