About Round Kirk, Orphir

Round Kirk, Orphir is a ruined medieval church near Finstown on Orkney Mainland. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas and later associated with Saint Magnus, it is Scotland’s earliest surviving circular church. The remains are publicly accessible, cared for by Historic Environment Scotland and protected as a scheduled monument.

The church probably dates from the late eleventh or early twelfth century and is traditionally attributed to Earl Haakon Paulsson. Its form drew upon Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre: a round nave roughly six metres across opened into a semicircular, barrel-roofed eastern apse containing a central window. The masonry walls measured about one metre in thickness. Most of the structure remained intact until 1757, when it was dismantled for building stone for a replacement parish church. Today, the apse and a short section of the circular nave wall remain.
