About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building and continues to serve its parish community.
The church’s origins are associated with a small timber chapel said to have been built after the death of Edwin of Northumbria in 633. A church was recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086 and was later granted by William II to Lincoln Cathedral. The wooden building was reconstructed during Henry II’s reign, with the present church dating to about 1175. Restorations took place in 1869 and 1890. Its organ was made by Forster and Andrews in 1862. Tradition also identifies the church as the place where Robin Hood married Maid Marian.
