About St. Chad's Chapel

St. Chad’s Chapel stands in Pleasley Vale, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire. Formerly a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, it shared a benefice with St Edmund’s. The Grade II listed building ceased to be used for worship in 2026 because its timber structure had deteriorated.

Joseph Paget commissioned the chapel in 1876 after taking a leading role at Pleasley Vale Mills, intending it to serve his family and local mill employees. Cox & Sons of London constructed the original white-painted timber building on the Derbyshire bank of the River Meden. Following a dispute about worship practices, Paget arranged for it to be taken apart and reconstructed across the river in Nottinghamshire. The rebuilt church incorporated brick and stone, a lead-covered roof and a bell tower. Its organ was made in 1880 by the Nottingham firm Lloyd & Co.
