About St John the Evangelist Church
St John the Evangelist Church is a Church of England place of worship at Otterburn in Northumberland, within the Newcastle upon Tyne area and just off the A696. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Work began with the setting of its foundation stone on 28 September 1855. Edward Maltby, then Bishop of Durham, consecrated the completed church on 27 October 1857. It was designed by Newcastle architect John Dobson and funded by three Davidson sisters from Lemmington Hall together with Mrs Askew of Pallinsburn. They intended it to serve local residents and their tenants, and provided an annual endowment of £100. A two-manual pipe organ made by Nicholson and Newbegin was installed in 1910.
