About St Cuthbert's Church
St Cuthbert’s Church is a Church of England church in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. Dating from the early fourteenth century, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its dedication recalls St Cuthbert, whose remains were carried by Lindisfarne monks during their flight from Danish raids and rested for a time at the church site.
An earlier building may have been timber-built and thatched with rushes. Surviving Norman work includes pilasters and two small windows in the western gable, while most of the existing fabric dates from around 1301 and later medieval rebuilding. Possible damage associated with the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 may have prompted substantial alterations. Features include two transepts, quadrant-shaped ceilings, stone slabs and a former leper window. During restoration in 1877, floor levels were lowered and numerous burials were uncovered. Three horse skulls were also found inside a sealed chamber above the bell.
