About St Mary's, High Church
St Mary’s, High Church is a Church of England parish church in Morpeth, Northumberland. Standing in the High Church district, on the southern side of the Wansbeck, it remains an active place of worship. Before the 1840s, it served as the town’s leading Anglican church. Its national importance is recognised through Grade I listed status.
Most of the present building was constructed during the 1300s, with 1350 recorded as its principal date. However, surviving sections from the second half of the 1100s display architecture bridging the Transitional and Early English periods. Restoration followed damage associated with Scandinavian raiders, Scottish attacks and Cromwell’s forces across different centuries. In the burial ground is the grave of suffragette Emily Davison, fatally injured by the king’s horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby. Her headstone includes the WSPU motto, “Deeds not words”.
