About Parish church of St Lawrence

The Parish church of St Lawrence is a Church of England parish church in Morpeth, Northumberland. Dedicated to Lawrence of Rome and belonging to the Diocese of Newcastle, it remains in parish use today. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Although an earlier timber church stood on the site in Anglo-Saxon times, construction of the surviving church began in 1132. Built from dressed stone, it has a long Norman nave beneath a nineteenth-century braced roof. Its west tower was added around 1200, followed by the belfry and spire during the fourteenth century. The Percy family built the southern aisle and porch in the fifteenth century, and fragments of medieval glazing remain in its eastern window. John Dobson oversaw substantial restoration in 1860, when the roof was renewed, wall plaster removed and benches replaced the enclosed pews. The organ was refurbished in 1983.
