About St James the Great, Morpeth
St James the Great, Morpeth is a Church of England place of worship in Morpeth, Northumberland. It remains open for services and belongs to the Anglican parish covering Morpeth. The building has Grade II* status, as does the entrance screen providing access from Newgate Street into the churchyard.
Inside, murals dating from around 1875 are attributed to Clayton and Bell, although the firm’s relevant documentation has not survived. They are thought to have been created using the Gambier Parry technique, a method developed for durable decorative painting on walls. Parts of the scheme were covered with paint during the 1970s. These surviving Victorian murals, together with the separately protected churchyard screen, are among the church’s notable historic features.
