About St Michael and All Angels Church
St Michael and All Angels Church is a Church of England church on Salter’s Road in Alnwick, Northumberland. Dating from around 1200, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its medieval origins and surviving fabric give it particular historical and architectural importance.
The church occupies ground once used for a small Roman encampment and incorporates Saxon corner stones in the nave. Its design includes Transitional elements, a lower chancel, a porch, north and south transepts, a three-bay arcade and a bell-cot. The south transept belongs to the earliest phase, while the north transept was later used for a Sunday school. Alterations over several centuries included sixteenth- and seventeenth-century work, sash windows fitted during the eighteenth century, and a substantial roof added around 1840. F. R. Wilson of Alnwick supervised a careful restoration in 1870.
