About St Mary and All Saints, Fotheringhay
St Mary and All Saints, Fotheringhay is an active Church of England parish church in Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire, in the Peterborough area. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and is notable for its memorials to prominent members of the House of York during the Wars of the Roses.
Edward III initiated the present complex, including a collegiate foundation beside the church. The collegiate building was largely complete by about 1430, while construction of the adjoining parish church began in 1434. Local mason William Horwood was commissioned by the Duke of York to construct its nave, porch and tower. Designed in the Perpendicular Gothic style, the surviving medieval structure includes the nave, side aisles and an eight-sided tower. The tower reaches about 24 metres at the battlements and 35 metres at its pinnacles. After the college was dissolved in 1547, the chancel was demolished. The church contains Yorkist burials, including Richard, Duke of York, and Edmund, Earl of Rutland.
