About St Marys Church, Clophill
St Marys Church, Clophill stands in ruins on the Greensand Ridge at the edge of Clophill, Bedfordshire, overlooking the nearby countryside. The former parish church is now a scheduled monument and is no longer consecrated or managed by the Church of England. Central Bedfordshire Council has legal responsibility for the site. Its churchyard remains notable for wild flowers and wildlife.
The church probably dates from around 1350 and was constructed in the Perpendicular style, chiefly from rough ironstone rubble with dressed stone details. Its nave predates the tower, whose arch and two-light belfry windows are thought to be fifteenth-century. A western gallery was installed in 1814, followed by alterations to the chancel in 1819. After a replacement church opened in the village centre in 1848, this building briefly served as a mortuary chapel. The chancel and galleries were removed, while two bells and other fittings were transferred. Theft of the lead roof in 1956 led to its decline into ruin.
