About St Peter's Church, Northampton
St Peter’s Church stands on Marefair in Northampton, Northamptonshire. Formerly a parish place of worship, it is now redundant and serves the wider community. The church has Grade I listed status and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is particularly valued for its Norman architecture and Romanesque carved stonework.
The present building probably dates from around 1150 and is attributed to Simon de Senlis II, although earlier timber and stone churches occupied the site. Built from reddish ironstone and pale oolitic limestone, it has a nave, chancel, side aisles and clerestory. Its richly varied capitals depict people, foliage, creatures and abstract forms. After the west tower collapsed, it was reconstructed farther east during the seventeenth century. George Gilbert Scott restored the building in the 1850s, renewing the roof and east end while preserving its Norman carving. Other features include a fourteenth-century font, Victorian stained glass and a well-preserved twelfth-century grave slab.
