About Holy Cross

Holy Cross is the Church of England parish church serving Daventry in Northamptonshire. Standing on Church Walk, it remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building. It is Northamptonshire’s sole surviving town church dating from the 18th century.

A church probably occupied the site before 1066, and a Cluniac priory was established nearby around 1108. After the earlier building became unsafe, William and David Hiorne constructed the present church from local ironstone between 1752 and 1758. Its broad west front has prominent pilasters, while a square tower is crowned by an obelisk-shaped spire. Inside are wooden galleries on three sides, an ornate pulpit, Venetian stained glass above the altar and marble memorials from the 18th and 19th centuries. Eight bells were installed in the new tower in 1754, with later recasting and restoration expanding the ring to ten in 1965.
