About Southlands Church
Southlands Church is a Victorian Methodist place of worship serving the South Bank district of York. It stands beside Bishopthorpe Road in North Yorkshire and continues to be associated with the Methodist tradition.
Work began with a stone-laying ceremony on 1 October 1886 involving Sir W. G. McArthur and several York civic representatives. Charles Bell drew up the plans, and the chapel welcomed its first congregation on 13 October 1887. Pale bricks from Walling Fen were used for the structure, while two matching towers frame an elaborate window on the façade. Its initial capacity was 750, with a broad main hall linked to fifteen rooms intended for teaching. An organ followed in 1893. A separate hall dating from 1920 provided space for a young men’s group and leisure activities. It also commemorated worshippers from the congregation who lost their lives in the First World War.
