About Church of St Oswald
The Church of St Oswald serves as the Church of England parish church for Farnham in North Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it has been protected at Grade I since 1966. Its present dedication to St Oswald of Worcester is relatively recent, while its earlier dedication is not known.
Construction began during the 12th century, and substantial Norman fabric remains in the chancel, including rounded window arches. Aisles were introduced over the following two centuries. Around 1500, the nave was lengthened westwards and the tower was built. George Gilbert Scott directed a restoration in 1854, adding the south porch and replacing the nave windows. Limestone and gritstone walls support a roof of stone slates. The tower incorporates paired bell openings, corner pinnacles, drainage spouts and a clock on its southern face. Inside are memorials commemorating members of the Slingsby family associated with Scriven Park.
