About Church of St Andrew
In Weaverthorpe, the Church of St Andrew is an Anglican place of worship belonging to the Church of England. Standing on a ridge above the North Yorkshire village and the Great Wold Valley, it is a prominent landmark in the Yorkshire Wolds. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The nave, chancel and four-stage tower are Norman and were probably constructed during the 1120s. An inscription on the sundial over the southern entrance names Herbert of Winchester as the founder, while documents suggest that a church was planned between 1108 and 1114. Calcareous gritstone, possibly sourced from Birdsall or Filey Brigg, was used for the building’s ashlar walls. The plain early Norman tower has a semicircular stair turret, and a south porch was added during the 14th century. George Edmund Street restored the church from 1870 to 1872 for Sir Tatton Sykes, altering the roofs and probably installing the nave seating.
