About Church of St Peter ad Vincula

The Church of St Peter ad Vincula is a Church of England place of worship at Thornaby Green in Thornaby, North Yorkshire. Standing on elevated ground near the River Tees, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. It is also traditionally associated with the baptism of Grace Pace, the mother of Captain James Cook, although this claim remains uncertain.

A church existed at Thornaby by 1086, while the present building is believed to date from the 12th century and replaced an earlier structure. Originally dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, it received its present dedication in 1908 following extensive restoration. The compact Norman Romanesque building has a single-room plan, with reused masonry and possible evidence of construction predating the Norman Conquest. Surviving details include a Norman font, medieval eastern buttresses, a western bellcote and unusual crossed-leaf decoration. A former chancel was removed at an unknown date, and its arch was subsequently blocked.
