About St Stephen's Church, Skipton

St Stephen’s Church, Skipton is an active Roman Catholic parish church near the centre of Skipton, North Yorkshire, beside Ermysted’s Grammar School. Dating from 1836, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. The parish is served by the Diocese of Leeds and maintains regular Sunday worship at the church.

The Tempest family founded the church, continuing a local Catholic tradition associated with their home at Broughton Hall since the seventeenth century. Charles Tempest placed the foundation stone in 1836, although disagreement over whether the building should be a parish church or a family chapel delayed its opening until 15 September 1842. Growth in the Catholic community led to enlargement during the early 1850s. Completed in 1853, the work added transepts, a side chapel and a reredos designed by Augustus Pugin. A presbytery was also provided for a resident priest. Jesuits cared for the parish until 1914, when responsibility passed to the Diocese of Leeds.
