About St Margaret Clitherow's Catholic Church
St Margaret Clitherow’s Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship at Threshfield, in the Skipton area of North Yorkshire. Dating from 1972–73, it has been protected at Grade II since 2012.
Plans followed an increase in Catholics living near Grassington during the 1960s. After Jack Langtry-Langton’s proposal failed to gain diocesan approval, his son Peter prepared another scheme, influenced by an illustration of an African church fashioned from palm foliage and branches. The resulting structure combines local limestone, stone-slate roofing and concrete supports covered with zinc. Its layout comprises a pair of squares crossing one another, supported externally by four buttress-like beams. Three elevations include angular additions, while a parish room occupies the remaining side. Notable details include a lead Celtic cross with figures by John Ashworth and John Loker. The interior contains timber seating arranged in curves, a screen that can be folded away and two prominent windows of coloured glass by Jane Duff.
