About Church of St Martin

The Church of St Martin is the Church of England parish church serving Scampston in North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in 1966.

A chapel was established at Scampston during the Norman era as a dependent place of worship associated with St Andrew’s in Rillington. This modest thatched structure was removed in 1845, when George Townsend Andrews designed a Gothic Revival replacement on the same foundations, retaining sections of the earlier northern and western walls. The church is constructed from sandstone with limestone detailing and buttresses beneath a slate-covered roof. Its plan includes a nave with two aisles, chancel, vestry and southern porch. A twin-arched bellcote crowns the west end. Interior features include an octagonal font with an ornate cover and a two-seat sedilia beneath trefoil arches. Some windows preserve their early stained-glass edging, while several furnishings, including the rood screen, pulpit, altar and stalls, were given in 1906.
