About Church of St Edmund
The Church of St Edmund stands at Scampston in North Yorkshire. This former Anglican place of worship has held Grade II status since 1987. Declared redundant at about the beginning of the 1970s, it was entrusted to an independent trust and continued to host roughly six services annually. Later structural decline led to its closure and deconsecration.
A medieval chapel at Knapton preceded the present building, which was erected within Knapton Hall’s grounds around 1870. John Gibson and Son added the chancel and aisle on the northern side from 1870 to 1872, as well as renovating the bellcote. Sandstone walls support slate roofing edged with perforated terracotta ornament. The plan includes an angular western baptistry, nave, chancel, southern porch and vestry, whose eight-sided spire rises above a partly octagonal base. Medieval stone carvings appear in the southern masonry. Internally, notable survivals include furnishings from the Victorian rebuilding, an eight-sided font, older pew woodwork, stained glass and a royal arms panel painted in 1676.
