About Church of Saint Andrew
The Church of Saint Andrew is the Church of England parish church serving Rillington in North Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1966.
The church originated in the 12th century, with the chancel and north arcade introduced around 1250 and the tower built during the 15th century. Its fabric combines sandstone with Hildenley limestone, while Westmorland and Welsh slate cover the roofs. Rebuilding affected the eastern end and southern side in 1825, followed by restoration under C. Hodgson Fowler in 1884 and 1885, when most windows were renewed. A south porch followed around 1920. The three-stage western tower rises to a slender recessed spire and includes buttresses, clock faces and a battlemented parapet. Inside are a 13th-century octagonal font, a piscina and a medieval wall painting showing the church’s enlargement and the appointment of Robert de Okham.
