About Bethesda Chapel
Bethesda Chapel stands in Rillington, North Yorkshire. This historic former place of worship is now a private house, having ceased to operate as a chapel in 1989. It has held Grade II listed status since 1966.
The chapel was founded in 1818 by George Sykes, a preacher who had departed from Wesleyan Methodism and established a Congregationalist congregation in the village. Restored in 1875, the building is constructed from limestone above a sandstone base, with sandstone detailing, corner stones and pantile roofing. Its gabled, three-bay front rises through two floors and displays the date within a circular panel. Arched windows and a central half-moon opening define the façade, while similar openings and a decorative eaves course appear on the side walls.
