About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is the Church of England parish church serving Over Silton in North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1970.
Its earliest surviving fabric is the 12th-century nave, together with the Norman south entrance and the arch leading into the chancel. The chancel was extended during the 14th century, when the porch was built and many windows were renewed. A bellcote followed in the 15th century, while the north vestry dates from the 19th century. Constructed in stone, the church has roofing of both local stone and Welsh slate. Notable details include the nave’s battlemented parapet, a broad gabled bellcote at the western end, and chevron decoration around the inner doorway. Inside are a 17th-century font, painted royal arms from the 18th century, and the original medieval door displayed on a wall.
