About St Peter

St Peter is the Church of England parish church serving Birkby, in the Northallerton area of North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1970.

The church originated in the 12th century, although the earlier structure was replaced entirely in 1776. Alterations in 1872 introduced Gothic-style windows, a south porch and a bellcote, while C. Hodgson Fowler designed two vestries added in 1888. The brick building has stone detailing and a stone-slate roof, with a three-bay nave and a one-bay chancel. Its western bellcote contains a pair of pointed openings for bells. Inside are oak seating from the 17th century and part of an 11th-century cross shaft built into the west wall. A carved capital dating to around 1160 was discovered beneath the floor and had once been used as a font.
