About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew is the Church of England parish church for Middleton, near Pickering in North Yorkshire. Dating from the eleventh century, it preserves fabric from its earliest period and has been protected as a Grade I listed building since 1953.
Constructed from sandstone, the church has a lead-covered nave, a slate-roofed chancel and a stone-slate porch roof. The lower tower dates from the original building, while the north arcade was added around 1130 and the south aisle later that century. Medieval alterations included renewed tower and chancel arches, an upper tower stage, a clerestory and a new nave roof. C. Hodgson Fowler restored the nave and substantially reconstructed the chancel in 1886. Inside are fifteenth-century stalls, a font with a sixteenth-century cover and an eighteenth-century pulpit. The north aisle houses three carved crosses from the tenth century, two of which were removed from the tower in 1911.
