About Church of St Mary Magdalene
The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a Church of England place of worship in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. It has held Grade II listed status since 1966, recognising its architectural and historic interest.
A church was established on the site during the 12th century and underwent many alterations before being demolished in 1874. Its replacement, designed by Whitby architect Mr Falkenbridge, opened in 1875 at a cost of £1,000. Temple Moore restored the building and enlarged its chancel in 1911. Constructed from sandstone, the church comprises a nave, chancel, southern porch, northern vestry and an undercroft at the eastern end. A projecting bellcote stands above the western end, while slender lancet openings form most of the windows. Surviving medieval elements include much of the original southern doorway arch, carved masonry within the chancel arch and a font fashioned from an earlier column. The stained glass was created by Charles Eamer Kempe.
