About Church of All Saints

The Church of All Saints is the Church of England parish church serving Hawsker, at Low Hawsker in North Yorkshire. It became a separate parish in 1878, having previously belonged to St Mary’s in Whitby. The church has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1989.

An Anglo-Saxon chapel once stood at Hawsker, and a surviving cross fragment dates from that period. Aschetin de Hawsker established a later chapel in the 1140s, although nothing of that structure remains. The present sandstone church, designed by E. H. Smales, dates from 1876–77 and is roofed in slate with red ridge tiles. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, southern porch and central tower, together with a vestry and organ chamber on the north side. Notable details include the tower’s lancet openings and staircase turret, several stained-glass windows, wall memorials and two original brass candelabra.
