About Church of Saint Giles
The Church of Saint Giles is the Church of England parish church for Lockton, North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and is a listed building. Its dedication has varied: it was associated with Saint Andrew in 1923 and was formerly recorded under Saint Mary before receiving its present dedication.
Dating from the 13th century, the church is constructed from sandstone and comprises a nave, chancel, southern porch, northern vestry and western tower. The nave and tower are roofed with stone flags, while pantiles cover the chancel and porch. During 15th-century alterations, the two-stage tower was added, several windows were changed and the arch into the chancel was reconstructed. Further work included rebuilding the eastern gable in 1723 and adding the porch in 1809, followed by restoration in the early 20th century. Interior features include a medieval font, an octagonal pulpit from the late 1600s, 17th-century communion rails and a reused clergy pew. The east window received stained glass in 1925.
