About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary stands in an isolated position near Levisham, between the village and Lockton in North Yorkshire. This former Anglican church is Grade II* listed. Regular worship ended during the 1950s, and the building became redundant in 1976 when St John the Baptist in Levisham assumed the parish role. The churchyard remains the parish burial ground, and an outdoor service takes place annually.

Much of the fabric originates from the 11th century, while a Saxon chancel arch and decorated masonry point to earlier worship on the site. Excavations uncovered five Anglo-Saxon carved stones and graves dating from the 10th century. The simple plan comprises an unaisled nave and chancel. A substantial rebuilding in 1802–04 left the chancel arch intact, followed by further work in 1884. The western tower was constructed in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. A Norman font and the stone carving called the Ryedale Dragon were later transferred to St John the Baptist.
