About Church of St John the Baptist
The Church of St John the Baptist is an active Anglican parish church in Kirkby Wharfe with North Milford, near Tadcaster in North Yorkshire. Recognised as a building of special architectural and historic importance, it received Grade II* designation in 1967.
Its origins lie towards the end of the 1100s, and fabric from that time remains in the nave and southern entrance. Additions were made over the following two centuries, while restoration campaigns took place in 1819 and 1860; the second involved substantial renewal of the outer structure. Constructed from sandstone and magnesian limestone, the building is roofed with Welsh slate. Its buttressed western tower rises in two levels and includes a stair turret, gargoyles and an embattled parapet. Notable interior survivals include a Norman baptismal font, three cross fragments from the 900s, a perforated screen of 16th-century date and remnants of medieval and Tudor-period glazing.
