About Old Church of St Andrew

The Old Church of St Andrew is a redundant Anglican church near Guisborough in North Yorkshire. Standing east of Upleatham, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Once used for worship and later as a mortuary chapel, the church is now notable for its unusually small interior, which can accommodate about 30 people.

The church has origins in the twelfth century, with the surviving west section of its nave displaying Norman architecture. Its present form measures about 20 feet by 13 feet, though archaeological work indicates that the medieval building was considerably larger. A battlemented western tower was added in 1684, possibly when the southern portion was taken down. Most of the remaining structure was removed in 1822, when the current east wall was probably built. Cross fragments found nearby, dating from the ninth and tenth centuries, provide evidence of earlier settlement at the site.
