About Church of St Nicholas
The Church of St Nicholas is a Church of England place of worship at Butterwick, within Foxholes in North Yorkshire. Recognised for its special architectural and historic interest, it has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.
Recorded by about 1130, the church originally served as a dependent chapel for St Mary’s at Foxholes. Much of it was reconstructed during the 14th century, although earlier masonry remains at the western end. Built mainly of sandstone, with red-brick elements and slate roofing, it has a continuous nave and chancel, a southern porch and a twin-opening bellcote above the west gable. G. Fowler Jones enlarged and restored the building in 1882 and 1883, adding the porch. Interior features include a cylindrical 12th-century font, a piscina, an aumbry, a grave slab dating from the late 1200s and an early 14th-century effigy thought to represent Robert FitzRalph.
