About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary in Foxholes, North Yorkshire, is a former Anglican place of worship. Now closed, it has been protected as a Grade II-listed building since 1966.

A church stood here during the Norman period and was restored or reconstructed around 1777. The present building dates from a complete rebuilding in 1866 by George Fowler Jones, who adopted a Neo-Norman design. Constructed mainly from sandstone, with limestone detailing, some Mansfield stone and slate roofing, it includes a nave, northern aisle, apsidal chancel, vestry and south-west tower. The four-stage tower is distinguished by lancets, circular openings, round-arched bell apertures and a pyramidal roof topped by a weathercock. The gabled porch has richly moulded Romanesque-style details, while the apse contains stained glass designed by Jean-Baptiste Capronnier.
