About Winterburn Chapel
Winterburn Chapel stands in Flasby with Winterburn, North Yorkshire. This historic Grade II listed building is no longer used for worship and has been converted into a private house. When it received listed status in 1954, it served as an Anglican chapel of ease connected with St Andrew’s Church in Gargrave.
A medieval place of worship once occupied the village but disappeared after the Reformation. An independent congregation emerged during the mid-1600s, initially gathering in private homes, and Yorkshire’s first Nonconformist ordination was held locally in 1677. Soon afterwards, Mrs Lambert established a Presbyterian chapel for miners in the area, where Oliver Heywood delivered many of his early sermons. The rendered stone building has a stone-slate roof, five bays and a single-storey plan. Its central doorway has a Tudor-arched lintel, while mullioned windows occupy the outer bays. Restoration in 1862 added a west-end vestry, followed by further changes during the 20th century.
