About St Thomas
St Thomas is a Church of England parish church on Thomas Street in Oldham, Greater Manchester. It remains in use for parish worship and belongs to the Manchester diocese. The building has been designated at Grade II*, reflecting its recognised heritage significance.
E. H. Shellard, a Manchester church architect, designed the building in the Gothic Revival tradition, drawing particularly on Perpendicular forms. It was consecrated by Manchester’s inaugural bishop, James Prince Lee, in June 1848. The western tower followed in 1855, while space for the organ was built in 1885. Constructed from dressed stone and roofed with slate, the church contains a nave of six bays, side aisles and a two-bay chancel. Its details include battlemented parapets, buttresses crowned with ornate pinnacles, dormer lighting and roof timbers supported on sculpted head corbels. Jean-Baptiste Capronnier produced much of the extensive glazing between 1874 and 1898. Major renovation was carried out from 1995 until 2004.
