About Church of St Lawrence, East Rounton
The Church of St Lawrence in East Rounton, North Yorkshire, is a Church of England place of worship. It has held Grade II listed status since 1966.
A small stone church was probably established here during the 15th century. In 1885, Lowthian Bell engaged architect Robert James Johnson to reconstruct it, preserving sections of the northern wall, its lancet and entrance, and possibly the eastern end. Built in sandstone beneath red tiles, the church has a single interior space combining nave and chancel, with a porch to the south. Its western gable carries a stone bell housing and cross. Notable furnishings include an open timber roof, a western gallery and two Baroque architectural surrounds thought to have come from Newcastle Cathedral. Stained glass includes work by Morris and Co and Douglas Strachan. Strachan’s northern memorial window commemorates Gertrude Bell through images connected with her travels and life, including Magdalen College, the Matterhorn, an Iraqi mosque and desert camels.
