About Church of St Helen
The Church of St Helen is the Church of England parish church serving Amotherby in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1954.
Christian worship on the site dates to the 12th century, although only relocated fragments of that early building survive. The tower was reconstructed during the 16th century, while the nave followed around 1708. George Fowler Jones carried out an extensive restoration in 1872, introducing the northern aisle, vestry and southern porch. Limestone survives in the older fabric, with later sandstone work beneath slate roofing. The battlemented western tower has openings for bells on each face. Notable details include a reused Norman doorway, medieval Bordesdon monuments, early cross fragments and carved furnishings by the long-serving vicar Charles Peach. Stained glass in the north aisle was made by James Powell and Sons in 1901 and 1914.
