About Kirk of Shotts, Hirst Road, Salsburgh
Kirk of Shotts, Hirst Road, Salsburgh is an active parish church serving Salsburgh, Shotts and the smaller communities between them. Set on a rise near the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, it is sometimes known locally as the M8 Church. The building remains in use and is protected with Category B listed status.
A chapel dedicated to St Catherine was founded on the site in 1450, when the area was still part of the extensive Bothwell and Shotts parish. It became a Protestant church following the Reformation in 1560. Repairs and partial rebuilding were ordered in 1640, with the work taking more than eight years. The present, larger church opened on 26 October 1821 and cost £2,270. Its spire was destroyed by lightning in July 1876. A sandstone baptismal font from the earlier church was later recovered, cleaned and returned to use. The graveyard includes memorial stones dating to 1624.
