About Lesmahagow Old Parish Church
Lesmahagow Old Parish Church stands in Church Square, Lanark, South Lanarkshire. It is a Category B listed building associated with a Church of Scotland congregation. Linked with Coalburn Parish Church in 1998, the congregations formally combined in 2017 while retaining premises and services in both villages. Worship in Lesmahagow resumed at the local Guide Hall in October 2023, and the church building was offered for sale in 2025.
A Celtic monastic community occupied the site before the 12th century, and the early church was dedicated to St Machutus, also known as St Malo. After the priory church was destroyed by fire in 1335, its replacement survived until the present rectangular building was erected in 1804. A later 19th-century apse was followed by a Brindley & Foster organ in 1889 and a chapter house in 1934. Fire caused extensive damage in 1981, after which the apse was repaired and the interior redecorated. Notable stained glass includes an east window depicting Christ’s removal from the cross, based on a work by Rubens.
