About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew is in Northwold, Norfolk, where it continues to serve the local Church of England parish. It forms part of the Grimshoe benefice and comes under Ely Diocese. The building has Grade I protection, while several eighteenth-century gravestones in its churchyard are separately designated at Grade II.
The earliest fabric belongs to the thirteenth century and may owe its beginnings to Hugh of Northwold, who later served as Bishop of Ely and supported church building. Flint, with render covering some areas, forms the main structure. The nave and side aisles are from the original medieval phase, followed by the fourteenth-century chancel and a tower raised towards the end of the fifteenth century. Nineteenth-century alterations expanded and partly rebuilt the church. Internally, notable survivals include a timber hammerbeam ceiling and an ornate Easter tomb recess, now in a deteriorated condition. Roof and structural repairs took place in 2018.
