About St Lawrence Parish Church, Hunworth
St Lawrence Parish Church, Hunworth is a Church of England parish church serving Hunworth, near Melton Constable in Norfolk. Its patron is Saint Lawrence, who died as a martyr in AD 258. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
The earliest surviving section is the nave, whose Norman character indicates an 11th-century origin, although its precise construction date is uncertain. Early walls were built from flint, with a Norman window in the south wall rediscovered during work in the 1960s. Later additions include 14th-century windows and a western tower begun around 1370. During extensive 15th-century alterations, the tower was heightened and strengthened, while a south transept and tall porch were added. The transept retains the church’s sole surviving medieval timberwork. A storm destroyed the original chancel in 1779, and its replacement was completed in 1850. Inside are a medieval font, one surviving bell, and memorial slabs commemorating members of the Britiffe family.
